The Early Years Foundation Stage (EYFS).

We have our very own curriculum, that incorporates the EYFS. The Early Years Foundation Stage (EYFS) sets the standards that all early years providers must meet to ensure that children learn and develop well and are kept healthy and safe. It promotes teaching and learning to ensure children’s ‘school readiness’ and gives children the broad range of knowledge and skills that provide the right foundation for good future progress through school and life.

At Grace’s we want to do all we can to help give your children the best start in life and so we have developed our very own curriculum. This curriculum gives the children the confidence and desire to learn and to question. Therefore, by the time they leave us and go to school, they have become independent little learners.

Seven areas of learning

Our tailor made curriculum encompasses all seven areas of learning from the EYFS Development Matters Guidance;

Personal, Social and Emotional
This area develops children’s positive sense of themselves. It teaches them about having respect for oneself and others, developing social skills and a good attitude to learning.

Communication, Language and Literacy
This area provides children with opportunities for speaking and listening and ignites children’s interest in reading and writing.

Physical
This area provides opportunities for children to be active and to develop their co-ordination, manipulation and movement. It develops understanding of the importance of being physically active and eating healthily.

Understanding of the World
Involves guiding children to make sense of their physical world and their community through opportunities to explore, observe and find out about people, places, technology and the environment.

Expressive Arts and Design
This area supports children’s curiosity and play. They explore and share their thinking, ideas and feelings in music, in art, movement and dance, role play and technology.

Mathematics
Involves providing children with opportunities to develop and improve their skills in counting, understanding and using numbers, calculating simple addition and subtraction problems; and to describe shapes, spaces and measures.

Literacy
Literacy development involves encouraging children to link sounds and letters and to begin to read and write.

Five additional aims.

Our curriculum also supports five additional aims for children that we feel very passionate about at Grace’s;
  • Becoming environmentally conscious with an awareness of sustainability

  • Having a healthy lifestyle

  • Showing an appreciation and care for the natural environment

  • Developing a genuine love for books, story telling and language

  • Becoming kind, empathic and resilient; having a positive contribution to society and an understanding of wider issues around the world

Our approach to learning.

There are many different pedagogies and beliefs about teaching and learning in Early Years. At Grace’s we have developed our own unique approach to learning. We believe that social interaction plays a fundamental role in ensuring a child develops holistically. Our team collaborate with the children to facilitate and scaffold their learning.

We feel passionately that children learn best by ‘doing’ and having real life experiences and that happy, self-motivated children will become confident and successful in the future. This is not a nursery for worksheets! The Grace’s approach is always child centred and a model of discovery, where children learn about the awe and wonder of the world!
