Chinese New Year
During the first part of February we have been celebrating Chinese New Year with the children. For part of this celebration we took the children on a trip to China Town. The children got a bus to Sidcup station then took a train to Charing Cross. After a short walk we arrived at China Town. The children and parents were split off into groups with an activity sheet each. They got to explore China Town looking at all the lanterns decorating the area and go in the shops looking for the list of items we had to buy such as, Chinese pears, star fruit and different types of noodles. After all our work and walking everyone was very hungry and they got to eat lunch in a Chinese restaurant. Everyone knew what lots of the food was because we had taken part in food tasting at nursery. Then some very tired but excited children made their way back to nursery.
This trip is an excellent opportunity for parental involvement and although the parents don’t have to come along they are all welcome if they wish. The children get so much out of this activity; they get to experience being in a different environment to nursery and learn how to adapt to this. They will meet members of the public and have to interact with them such as the waiting staff in the restaurant or the bus driver and get to experience a culture that may be different to their own. They have to learn about safety in the outdoor environment like crossing the road and making sure they are staying close to their adult. In the supermarket they get to handle money and experience the different food and produce they sell. They get to show their social and dinner table skills while in the restaurant. Activities like this are amazing for developing their self confidence and self awareness skills.
