Diabetes Awareness Day
Diabetes is when the body’s ability to produce or respond to the hormone insulin is impaired, resulting in abnormal metabolism of carbohydrates and elevated levels of glucose in the blood. There are two main types of diabetes, Type 1 and Type 2.
Diabetes affects a large amount of people, including one of our children, some of our team and the families of Grace’s. Because of this, it came to our attention that we as a nursery could do something to raise awareness.
In November it was ‘Diabetes Awareness Month’. As part of this, on Friday 29th November Grace’s held a Diabetes Awareness Day; during this all of the children and team were given an opportunity to wear something blue for the day. The children were spoken to about diabetes and, with the help of our diabetic bear, in Saplings 2, were shown the different equipment and medicine that people with diabetes need to have. During this, the children seemed really interested and asked lots of questions throughout.
Diabetes Awareness Day was a really good opportunity for the children to learn something new and develop their awareness of auto-immune diseases. We hope to include this in the events list again next year.
