Biodiversity

Rewilding area.

We have a section of our gardens that we have dedicated to an area of rewilding. This is an approach to ecological restoration that focuses on restoring natural processes and ecosystems to a more wild state. This has meant a more hands-off approach, allowing natural processes to take their course and hopefully encourage wildlife such as bees and butterflies to the area. As part of our Biodiversity work with the children, we celebrated World Bee Day, where we invited Ruxley Bee Keeper in to see our children. They enjoyed wearing bee keeper outfits, seeing bees at work and learning more about what they do. Of course, they also tasted some yummy honey!

Marine

Sealife Centre trip and beach clean.

Every year we take the children on a trip to the beach, but this year we decided to visit Brighton Sealife Centre to learn more about marine life. This was a long term project and leading up to the trip, the children celebrated themed days such as Whale Day, Penguin Day, Turtle Day and World Ocean Month. We are hoping to cultivate and nurture an appreciation and love for everything below the sea.

Following the visit, the children, team and parents did a beach clean up, collecting any litter with their litter pickers!

Growing our own grub!

This year we have grown produce all year round! All our gardens have fruit, vegetables, herbs and flowers growing all over! We have raised planters, pots, hanging baskets, home made pots, beds with a range of produce that we have grown with the children; carrots, peppers,  courgettes, pumpkin, squash, potatoes, beetroot, corn, broccoli, lettuce, radish, garlic, tomatoes, runner beans, peas, strawberries blueberries, loganberries, , garlic chives, dill,  rosemary, mint, parsley, chives and basil.

The children have been part of the whole process, from propagating, to learning how to care for our fruit, vegetables and herbs. They of course have enjoyed sampling their home grown food! Little Grace’s have enjoyed a daily supply of raspberries!
